Deadliest Journeys: Pakistan

DEATH TUNNEL The Lowari Pass in Pakistan winds its way through the mountainous region bordering Afghanistan. Ten kilometres of this road, dubbed the ‘death tunnel’ by locals, cuts straight through the mountain. Landslides and avalanches are common and the tunnel has to be cleared every day for rocks. Drivers like 23 year old Dawood navigate it at their peril. The smallest error can be fatal.

Much of the road from Rampur-Bushire to Raksham, HP, was equally bad and risk-laden, when Tanushree and I ‘did’ it in my Maruti-Gypsy, in the winter of 1995. The trip, to put it mildly, was as hair-raising, nail-biting, gut-churning, head-spinning, heart-stopping and as balls-in-the-mouth as this one! Though, mercifully, quite a bit shorter.
